The Cartalore app icon: a parchment world map on a navy globe, with figures from four eras walking a timeline across it.

History, told on the map where it happened

Every story happened somewhere, on a map that has since been redrawn. Cartalore puts the old map back. Pick a person, a place or a turning point, and read it chapter by chapter on the world as it stood at the time, with the cities under the names they had then and the borders where they actually ran.

The Cartalore map at 672 CE over Europe and the Near East, labelled Saxons, Duchy of Bavaria, Lombard Kingdom, Eastern Roman Empire and Kingdom of Aksum, above a library card for the story Liquid Fire: The Byzantine Naval Secret, eight chapters, set in Heliopolis, Egypt, with a Continue Reading button.
Every story on the map of its own moment. Borders, names and empires as they stood at the time, so you can see where a story sits in the world it belonged to.
The Cartalore reader: the eastern Mediterranean drawn at 672 CE and labelled Eastern Roman Empire, with Heliopolis marked, above a toolbar naming the place, Heliopolis, Egypt, and chapter one of eight, The Secret Recipe of Heliopolis, from a story about Greek fire.
The map travels with the story. It moves as the chapters move, and any story can be listened to instead of read.
The Cartalore Library page: a search field, a count of 2,964 stories, an A to Z sort control, a row of subject filters reading Warfare, Archaeology, Trade Routes and Colonialism, and a story about the campaign against polio opened in place to show its description, its ten chapters and 22 minute read, its subjects and a View on map button.
Over 2,000 stories, and growing. Every region of the world and every era, from the first cities to living memory.

The history that never gets an episode

Most of history never makes it to your feed. A podcast or a channel can only make so many episodes a year, and each one has to find an audience, so they keep going back to the same ground: Rome, the Tudors, the Second World War. Cartalore covers those as well, but the library was built to be wide rather than popular. It runs from the first cities of Mesopotamia through to the siege of Sarajevo, and every region of the world is in there. Much of it covers subjects most readers will never have come across, and it keeps growing.

Read any of them wherever you are, or listen on the walk or the commute. If the library does not have what you are after, create your own storylines on whatever you want to know more about, and never stop learning.
